This could be due to malformed or bent metal, or it could be something like a piece of paper in the contact. I would suspect that the shunt is stuck in the "plug inserted" mode, as in there is no shunt connection. When you plug anything into that jack, the shunt contact back to the internal speakers is opened, and the signal travels solely to the external speakers. When nothing is plugged into the dock's headphone jack, a shunt contact is closed that routes the signal back to the internal speakers on the laptop.
I have to agree with David Wiese: From what you describe, it is likely that the headphone jack on the dock is jacked up. I would be surprised if this is due to a problem on the laptop's motherboard.
